About this event
Join Humboldt Asians & Pacific Islanders in Solidarity (HAPI) on Sunday, October 11, from 1–4 p.m. for the grand opening of the Eureka Chinatown Monument at the corner of 1st and E Streets in Old Town Eureka. After more than five years of community effort, this free celebration honors Eureka's Chinese community with music, dance, Chinese lion dancing, Asian food, a kids' zone, poetry, and remarks from community leaders. Meet local historians and explore the history commemorated by the monument; the event also celebrates the launch of the children's book Yung Stands Strong: A Story of Expulsion and Resilience. The monument, by artist John King with landscape architect Jessica Hall, commemorates the 1885 Chinese expulsion.
