Trinidad Head Lighthouse is an 1871 historic brick lighthouse perched 196 feet above the Pacific on Trinidad Head, about 20 miles north of Eureka, and still active as an aid to navigation. Managed by the Bureau of Land Management as part of the California Coastal National Monument and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it famously survived a 200-foot rogue wave on Dec. 31, 1914 that submerged the bluff and briefly extinguished the light. The site is accessed via the Trinidad Head Trail with panoramic views of Trinidad Bay, and docent-led tours are offered by the Trinidad Museum Society on the first Saturday of each month from 10am to noon.
