About this event
Wusatoumuduk: We Make It Burn is a new multi-media play about Cultural Fire, envisioned, created, and collaboratively written in present-day Humboldt County. Produced by Sugarbush Hill Moving Lhatsik, a Dreammaker project of the Ink People, led by Michelle Hernandez (Wiyot) and Zuzka Sabata. The play emphasizes the urgent need to embrace time-honored land stewardship practices that have supported ecological balance for millennia. It features local Native cast members, nationally acclaimed Native director Tara Moses (Seminole Nation of Oklahoma, Mvskoke), and traditional Wiyot stories told through shadow puppetry. This October 18 performance at Sequoia Park is one of two dates featuring a pre-show panel of local fire experts (Olivia Chase, Hoopa/Tsnungwe; Isha Goodwin, Karuk; Sarah Vroom; Heather Rickard) discussing cultural, prescribed, and wildland fire, moderated by Outreach Coordinator Cleo Woelfle-Hazard, followed by informal conversations with fire practitioners. Schedule: panel 6:00-6:45pm, informal discussions 6:45-7:15pm, showtime 7:30pm. Free and all-ages appropriate. Bring camping chairs, blankets, headlamps or flashlights, and dress warmly.
