Sister Carol, born Carol Theresa East on January 15, 1959 in Kingston, Jamaica, is a Grammy-nominated reggae and dancehall DJ/singer known as Black Cinderella and Mother Culture. Raised in Brooklyn, New York and educated at City College of New York, she emerged in the early 1980s under the mentorship of Brigadier Jerry, releasing debut Liberation for Africa (1983) and breakout Black Cinderella (1984). Her conscious, Rastafari-rooted lyrics and militant yet feminine deejay style broke barriers for women in the male-dominated dancehall era, leading to extensive world tours with artists like Burning Spear and appearances in Jonathan Demme films including Something Wild, Married to the Mob and Rachel Getting Married.
