Gamelan Sekar Sequoia is a community-based Javanese gamelan ensemble based in Arcata, California, a few blocks from Humboldt State University (now Cal Poly Humboldt). Directed by Sharon Millman, the group plays a bronze pelog-tuned gadhon set of traditional instruments imported from Central Java, focusing on classical Solonese repertoire with an emphasis on the soft, elaborating instruments. The ensemble performs several times a year at community events, Arts Alive! nights in Eureka and Arcata, the Morris Graves Museum and local arts festivals, often collaborating with shadow puppeteer Sean Powers.
